Saffron Walden Clean Air Project: Creating a More Sustainable Essex Town

Tetra Tech’s delivery of a transport strategy to Uttlesford District Council highlighted the issues preventing local sustainable travel and presented strategies to reduce general traffic in the area.

Challenge

In 2023, Uttlesford District Council commenced the Saffron Walden Clean Air Project, with the challenge of creating a cleaner, healthier, and greener environment in the Essex town.

Funded by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the project encompassed a wide range of schemes and initiatives to help raise awareness of the impact that individuals’ travel choices make on the environment.

Solution

A transport strategy was created for the town, which we delivered for the Council in the summer/autumn of 2024.

The strategy not only highlighted the issues preventing more sustainable travel within the town, but also presented solutions to these issues through an integrated package of measures to reduce the dominance of general traffic, enhance the quality of the public realm, and make walking, cycling, and public transport more viable transport options.

“Saffron Walden is a beautiful town undermined by the dominance of traffic on its historic streets. We worked with the Council and stakeholders to identify measures that will transform the look and feel of the town in the future, and the ease with which residents and visitors can access the town centre and train station.”

– Ben King, Associate Director at Tetra Tech
