In our second interview celebrating International Women in Engineering Day, Principal Engineer Eleftheria Mazioti discusses making a positive impact on communities and mentoring the next generation of female innovators.
What is your role at Tetra Tech?
I am a Chartered Principal Civil Engineer and part of Tetra Tech’s Civil North Team. My role involves communicating daily with clients and providing fee proposals, as well as leading, training, and mentoring team members.
Collaborating effectively with other disciplines to maximise project outputs is also an important part of my role, as well as guiding and motivating my team of four direct reports.
How did you get into engineering?
I grew up on an island close to Athens, Greece, and after school I used to visit my mother, who was a project manager on the technical department of our island. I saw from a young age how engineers worked, and how design solutions developed, which got me very excited about pursuing a career in engineering.
What is your proudest achievement in engineering so far?
During the Covid-19 pandemic I supported the delivery of an Emergency Hospital in Doha, Qatar. The Hospital was designed and built in just two weeks as part of an urgent emergency response initiative and accommodated 504 beds with associated medical facilities.
My Doha colleagues contacted me and asked for my help to deliver a highway and drainage design in less than eight hours. Dealing with different time zones and quickly learning the different design standards in this limited timeframe, I’m proud to have delivered a high-quality design on time.
Making a positive impact to communities during such an uncertain period during the pandemic made me proud to be an engineer.
What are your future goals and aspirations at Tetra Tech?
For now, I want to continue developing my skills and gain more experience. Our Leading with Science® approach to challenging projects helps me to better understand the innovative sustainable solutions we provide to our clients.
I’m looking forward to continuing to work with and learn from an amazing wealth of experienced people in my local team and across Tetra Tech globally. In addition to my project work, I enjoy mentoring others and want to continue to inspire the next generation of engineers.
What advice do you have for women considering a career in engineering?
Stay focused on your goals, and don’t lose your enthusiasm if the process takes longer than you thought. It’s important to always see the bigger picture, so embrace each chapter of your journey. Be patient but also, be persistent. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and choose a mentor you admire and aspire to be like.
