Since joining Tetra Tech, Max Beattie, Graduate Project Manager, has had a wealth of opportunities to enhance his career including working on our project in Belize, which he describes as an unforgettable experience.
What did you do during your time in Belize?
I worked on a construction project for BATSUB (British Army Training Support Unit Belize) in the heart of Belize.
How did the opportunity to spend time in Belize come your way?
The opportunity came about by working with good people who trusted and believed in me to get involved in such a significant project.
My colleague was initially asked about the opportunity whilst we were both attending the Project Controls Expo in London. Due to other commitments, the dates and times didn’t suit him, so he asked me if it was something I would be interested in. When I said I most certainly would be, he put me in contact with the lead project manager to discuss.
What was a typical day like for you in such a beautiful part of the world?
As we were staying on an active military base, early starts were a must. Not that I minded. Most days I would wake before the sun rises and watch it come up on my morning run or swim. Then we would drive 30 minutes to site through serene countryside in 30+ degree heat (not bad for early December if you ask me!) and spend the day amongst the local workers or completing administrative tasks in the on-site office.
The peaceful drives back were always a great way to wind down and I got to watch the sun set at around 17:45 as it does for most of the year, with Belize being so close equator (+/- half an hour). On the weekends myself and other people I met on the project were lucky enough to have the opportunity to explore some different areas of the country including Belmopan, Big Rock Falls, and Caye Caulker.
What was your favourite thing about your time in Belize?
The food in Belize was definitely a standout for me. Stewed chicken, rice and beans, and fry jacks were all amazing and being so close to the Mexican border, foods such as tamales, empanadas and tacos were delicious. The landscapes in some places were some of the most beautiful I have ever seen so having the opportunity to see these things was invaluable.
Did you do anything to celebrate before you left?
As I was scheduled to leave in mid-December, the project team and contractors went out for a meal in the city to celebrate the upcoming festivities. It was a great chance to properly say goodbye and have some fun before heading home for Christmas.
Was visiting other parts of the world something you wanted in a career?
Absolutely. I’ve always wanted the option to travel and to get to go to places as far away as Belize makes it even better! I hope to return to Central and South America soon!
