Tetra Tech is working with the Education Authority across their scope of services to conduct radon monitoring in Northern Ireland.

The Education Authority (EA), sponsored by the Department of Education, has commissioned Tetra Tech to conduct radon monitoring throughout their portfolio of schools, youth centres and other sites across Northern Ireland.

Colleagues based in our Belfast office are providing a fully managed service over a three-year framework contract, including the supply, placement, and analysis of passive radon monitors, provision of results and recommendations for further assessment or mitigation measures.

The monitored sites are in radon affected areas, including Education Authority sites and sites the EA has maintenance responsibility for, such as:

  • schools
  • school meals
  • kitchens
  • administrative offices
  • youth centres
  • transport depots

Compliance and safeguarding support

Our experts will provide radon support and consultancy services for the EA to benefit the community across the education sector and beyond.

By maintaining and safeguarding the EA’s assets, Tetra Tech is continuing to deliver economic value to the Northern Ireland public sector while assisting the Education Authority in maintaining their regulatory compliance requirements.

Providing efficient delivery with minimum disruptions to the activities of the premises being monitored, the contract represents a significant step for ongoing safety and regulatory compliance in collaboration with the appropriate statutory authorities.

Michael Thomson, Senior Environmental and Fire Risk Compliance Manager for the Education Authority, stated:

“There is always an increased risk when moving to an outsourced contract from an in-house delivery model, as there are many uncertainties. Tetra Tech’s professionalism, flexibility and approach to collaborative working has made the transition more straightforward and enjoyable than I ever imagined it could be.

The speed and efficiency at which the delivery team have managed to place all radon monitors across the EA Estate, within a hugely challenging timeframe, whilst having to make dynamic decisions on the ground and respond to the occasional query from Schools, has been phenomenal.”

This recognition is a testament to our colleagues who have ensured radon gas-associated risks are understood and mitigated, allowing the EA to fulfil their legal obligations and for protecting the educational community of Northern Ireland.
